Based upon exemplary standards and practices, ASM provides a rigorous college-preparatory program that enables our graduates to gain admission into top universities around the world. Through our full-service college counseling program, we assist students in all stages of college planning and applications, with the goal of securing admission into the students’ top choice universities.
In addition to having the longest-tenured American curriculum in Madrid, ASM also offers the International Baccalaureate Program. The grading system follows.
Students are given letter grades based on a 100 point scale as illustrated below:
A -- Excellent (90-100)
B -- Good (80-89)
C -- Satisfactory (70-79)
D -- Poor (60-69)
F -- No credit (59 and below)
P -- Some courses are Pass/Fail (Pass equals 60 or above)
These above letter grades, reflecting accomplishment and relative standing in both subject matter and skills taught, are accompanied by effort and behavior marks:
E -- Excellent
S -- Satisfactory
NI -- Needs Improvement
U -- Unsatisfactory
GPA is calculated based on subjects taken at the American School of Madrid only. Weight is applied only to those courses taken as Higher Level IB at ASM. This gives a "B" earned in Higher Level IB courses, a greater "weight" than a "B" received in a non-IB course.
Due to the college-preparatory nature of the school, the transience of the community, and the small class sizes, ASM does not believe that class rank gives an accurate projection of student performance and potential college success. As a result, ASM does not provide a class rank for student academic credentials, however, a valedictorian and salutatorian are determined at commencement.
