Welcome to the American School of Madrid's Summit Team Website Conceived in 2001 during a Grade 6 field trip to the Gredos Centre in Navarredonda de Gredos, the Summit Team has evolved into an elective mountaineering class in the Middle School as well as a loosely connected group of students, parents and teachers who enjoy spending time outdoors. In class, students learn the rudiments of rock climbing, orienteering, first aid, mountain ecology and other skills related to traveling and living safely in mountain environments. We also learn about the history of alpinism and some of the famous climbers and explorers who have contributed so much to mountaineering. Our activities outside of class include hikes in the Guadarrama Mountains and the Parque Regional de la Alta Cuenca del Rio Manzanares -a.k.a La Pedriza. We look forward to the day when we can contemplate trips farther afield to the Gredos Mountains, or even as far north as the Picos de Europa. We hope that these pages will stimulate an interest in you and others to enjoy and care for the great outdoors that surround us. |
