ASM has put into place a 10-year Campus Plan which includes a stunning play landscape. This area is currently under construction and will be completed in 2023. It represents the most current thinking in play design and will be the first of its kind in Spain and will stand out as a leading playground concept among schools in Europe.
 
ASM is developing a 4,000-square-meter outdoor learning environment. We wanted to clearly establish the value of play and playfulness in learning, provide an opportunity for students to connect with nature, make sustainability a visible ASM priority, and create a beautiful space for our community to meet and interact.

ASM has been working with OPAL, an outdoor play and learning consultancy group based in the UK, and with BDU, an award-winning Spanish landscape design and construction company that specializes in developing unique outdoor learning and play spaces.

 
The ASM Play Landscape offers much more than a playground. This will bring ASM's values of collaboration imagination, creativity, and play made real.In all of ASM’s facilities planning and construction, we put learning first. The OPAL project extends learning outside and beyond the classroom. Play is not just something we do as children and then set aside when we are older. Play and playfulness are a mindset for problem-solving, developing new ways to use resources, and considering new arrangements and structures. Whether today's students grow up to be engineers or architects, entrepreneurs, or nuclear physicists, being playful is critical for creativity and innovation. ASM's new play landscape makes this possible.

The project includes
  • Creating a landscape that invites exploration
  • A landscape for play complete with hills, climbing walls, and slides built into the terrain
  • A special feature for exploration and play with water
  • Areas for social gatherings for all students and members of the community
  • Professional learning for Lower School faculty to understand the role of play in learning and to meaningfully incorporate play into the Lower School student experience
