Caring Hands pays it forward
Mary Swanson, Middle School Learning Support Teacher

Middle School students in the Caring Hands ASA, are paying it forward with a service project called Operation Kilos Online. The club has raised over €1,313 donations which is equivalent to 1,181.7 kilos of food (2,599.74 lbs).

During the month of December, Middle School students in the Caring Hands ASA, are paying it forward with a service project called Operation Kilos Online. This is different from previous years considering the new COVID safety measures.

The ASA’s annual food drive typically consists of organizing a holiday project where advisories work together to collect and donate items to help those in need during the holiday season. Due to the ongoing pandemic, Caring Hands advisors and students wanted to limit the number of contacts to keep those receiving the items safe and healthy. With the help of Banco Alimentos, they are able to do just that, and can successfully carry out their service project. This virtual program allows families the option to donate money electronically or pick and choose food baskets to donate through a link provided by Banco Alimentos.

As of the first week of December, the club has raised over €1,313 donations which is equivalent to 1,181.7 kilos of food (2,599.74 lbs). This service project will continue throughout the month in hopes of raising even more donations.

Carol Alcantaram, the newest advisor for Caring Hands, states “This was the club's way of giving back to the community especially during the pandemic. Many residents of Madrid have been affected in some way or another. Many have lost their jobs and can no longer support themselves or their families.”
